LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Headingley: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Somerset 272, Yorkshire 320-7 (Yorkshire 6 pts, Somerset 4 pts) Match scorecard
Gale is captaining Yorkshire at Headingley for the first time |
Andrew Gale hit his first century as Yorkshire captain to help his side into a first-innings lead over Somerset. Gale made 101, sharing a sixth-wicket stand of 149 with England all-rounder Tim Bresnan (61) as the Tykes batted all day after resuming on 16-1. Opener Joe Sayers made 51 as Yorkshire closed on 320-7, a lead of 48. It was hard work for the Somerset bowlers, although Charl Willoughby and Damien Wright both finished with two wickets apiece. But the day belonged to Gale, who along with Bresnan, dug his side out of a hole as they slipped to 142-5, still 130 behind, after Anthony McGrath, Sayers and Jonny Bairstow were trapped leg before by Willoughby, Wright and Peter Trego respectively and Jacques Rudolph was caught behind off Alfonso Thomas. Gale did enjoy some good fortune along the way, with Willoughby seeing him dropped at cover by Trego when on 23. It was a rare mistake, though, as Gale brought up his seventh first-class century with a scampered single before eventually falling one run later when he smacked a long hop off Zander de Bruyn to Wright at cover. Bresnan followed soon afterwards, trapped leg before by Wright, but not before he had helped his side to a third batting bonus point, leaving Adil Rashid and Ajmal Shahzad to bat out the day.
