COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Surrey 430 and 24-1, Glamorgan 702-8 dec (Surrey 6pts, Glamorgan 8pts) 23-26 September
Mark Cosgrove was eventually run out for 175 from 262 balls |
Glamorgan smashed a massive 702-8 declared on day three at The Oval, leaving Surrey needing to bat out the final day to avoid defeat. After resuming on 271-0, Mark Cosgrove (175) and Gareth Rees (154) extended their stand to 315. The visitors slipped to 405-5, only for Mark Wallace (139) and Jim Allenby (137) to share a new county record sixth-wicket stand of 240. But the hosts closed on 24-1, needing another 238 to avoid an innings defeat. After Surrey toiled for four-and-a-half hours to end the Glamorgan opening partnership, the breakthrough finally came when Cosgrove was run out attempting a short single by home skipper Stewart Walters' throw to wicketkeeper Jon Batty. Rees and Mike Powell took the score to 368. But, when Rees was caught by Batty to become paceman Richard Logan's first wicket for Surrey, it sparked a mini collapse. Powell was stunningly caught at second slip by Walters off Logan before Will Bragg and Jamie Dalrymple both fell to Chris Jordan (2-85). But any hopes Surrey had of running through the Glamorgan middle order were dashed by Wallace and Allenby, who broke the previous best sixth-wicket stand of 230 set by Willie Jones and Len Muncer against Worcestershire at New Road in 1953. Wallace made his second century of the summer (the fifth of his career), while Allenby posted his first three-figure score since joining Glamorgan from Leicestershire in mid-summer. Both men were dismissed by Rangana Herath, Allenby's departure signalling the Glamorgan declaration. With seven overs to survive until the close, Surrey lost Michael Brown bowled offering no shot to Garnett Kruger.
