Surrey hit by Glamorgan fightback

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Glamorgan 271-0, Surrey 430
(Surrey 5pts, Glamorgan 4pts)
23-26 September

Garnett Kruger took six wickets and Mark Cosgrove and Gareth Rees hit centuries to help Glamorgan fight back against Surrey at The Oval.

After Surrey began day two on 334-4, Matt Spriegel (100) moved to his maiden first-class hundred.

But Kruger (6-93) took four of the wickets to fall as the hosts were bowled out for 430.

Openers Cosgrove (145 no) and Rees (109 no) then shared an unbroken stand of 271, as Glamorgan closed 159 behind.

The stand between the two left-handers, a club-record partnership for any wicket against Surrey, sustained Glamorgan's lingering promotion hopes.

However, with Northants closing in on an innings victory over Leicestershire, it seems that Jamie Dalrymple's side are set for another season in Division Two.

Kruger's efforts helped Glamorgan take the last six Surrey wickets in just 36 overs, with the former South Africa international beginning the rout when Usman Afzaal chopped on to leg stump without adding to his overnight 170.

Chris Schofield followed soon after, leaving Chris Jordan (42) to accompany Spriegel to his century.

Spriegel departed one ball after reaching three figures, shovelling Robert Croft into the hands of Dean Cosker, leaving Surrey to lose their last four wickets for 30 runs.

Glamorgan's reply could have turned out differently had Cosgrove not been put down in the slips on 12 by Jordan off the bowling of debutant Richard Logan.

But he and Rees, who passed 1,000 Championship runs for the season, batted Glamorgan to a position of dominance by the close.
