PRO40 DIVISION ONE, Trent Bridge: Gloucestershire 58-1 beat Nottinghamshire 57 by nine wickets(Glos 2pts, Notts 0pts)
Anthony Ireland claimed 3-10 from his eight overs |
Nottinghamshire were bowled out for just 57, their lowest ever one-day score, on the way to a nine-wicket defeat at the hands of Gloucestershire. Only Akhil Patel (41) reached double figures as seamers Anthony Ireland and David Payne both claimed 3-10. Gloucestershire then raced to their target inside eight overs, Kadeer Ali finishing unbeaten on 30. The defeat at Trent Bridge condemns the home side to bottom spot in Division One of the last-ever Pro40 campaign. The meeting of the two worst sides in the top flight was the final game of Mark Ealham's 21-year career, as well as Nottinghamshire captain Chris Read's official benefit match. But, after Read won the toss, the home side were soon in trouble at 4-3, Gemaal Hussain (2-17) removing openers Matt Wood and Ali Brown, while Ireland accounted for Alex Hales. This became 17-5 when Samit Patel got a leading edge to point and Kevin O'Brien edged a ball that kept low to wicketkeeper Steve Adshead, both off the bowling of Ireland. There was a five-over gap between the next clatter of wickets, when debutant Payne had Read caught at mid-on, then bowled Ealham for a second-ball duck. Debutant Ben McGuire was bowled for a duck - one of six in the innings - before the younger Patel brother and Darren Pattinson shared a ninth-wicket stand of 28. But Jon Lewis (2-20) bowled both Patel and last man Andy Carter to complete the embarrassment. The total of 57 sets a new low for Notts in one-day cricket, eradicating the 66 they made against Yorkshire in September 1969. Faced with such a low total to defend, Nottinghamshire opened with Samit Patel's left-arm spin and he removed Porterfield lbw for seven in the third over. But Kadeer struck five fours and a six as the match to finish off the match in little over two hours.
