A combination of rain and bad light meant just 28 overs of play were possible on day one between Gloucestershire and Surrey at Bristol. In that time Surrey moved to 96-1, with Jon Batty still there on 39 and debutant Arun Harinath unbeaten on 18. Batty shared an opening stand of 70 with Michael Brown, who was trapped lbw by James Franklin for 30. Bad light forced an early lunch before rain forced play to be abandoned midway through the afternoon session.
