COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Taunton: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Sussex 742-5dec, Somerset 164-0 (Sussex 5pts, Somerset 1pt) 19-22 August 2009
After a deluge of runs on the first two days of Somerset's home Championship clash with Sussex, the West Country rain was the winner on day three. Only 18.4 overs of play were possible, at the end of which the hosts are still 578 in arrears and heading for a draw. Just 11 balls were bowled in the morning session before the rain came. They managed a further 15 minutes after an early lunch and then, in the 12.4 overs before the day's final terminal downpour, Somerset advanced to 164-0. After a further inspection, the umpires finally abandoned play for the day just before the scheduled tea interval. Arul Suppiah finished on 80, while the country's leading scorer Marcus Trescothick was unbeaten on 71. Trescothick now has 1,401 Championship runs to his credit from the 12 matches he has played this summer. And that has taken him past his previous Championship-best season haul of 1,343 in 2007.
