Shahzad and rain hit Warwickshire

Shahzad celebrates taking the wicket of Ian Bell on day one at Scarborough

Ajmal Shahzad took three wickets to give Yorkshire the better of the 22 overs of play that were possible on day one against Warwickshire.

After the home side won the toss at Scarborough, Shahzad (3-19) removed Ian Westwood in his first over.

Deon Kruis then bowled Ant Botha, before Shahzad accounted for Ian Bell and Jim Troughton to leave Warwickshire 53-4 at lunch.

The rain came at the interval, signalling the end of the day's play.

With Tim Bresnan away with the England one-day squad, Shahzad was given the new ball and made an immediate impact by having Westwood caught at second slip by Joe Sayers.

Shahzad was replaced after just three overs by Kruis, a move that paid immediate dividends when Botha's off-stump was pegged back by a full-length delivery.

However, Shahzad was back in to the attack and got rid of the dangerous-looking Bell (23) with a ball that nipped back and brushed the off-bail as the England batsman offered no stroke.

The 24-year-old then completed an fine morning's work by enticing Troughton to edge to Jonny Bairstow at third slip.

The rain set in during the lunch break and although it dried later in the afternoon the light never improved sufficiently for play to restart.
