Stalemate for Bears and Somerset

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Edgbaston:
Somerset 323-8 dec and 156-4 drew with Warwickshire 261
(Warwicks 8pts, Somerset 10pts)
5-8 August 2009

Marcus Trescothick
Trescothick hit 15 fours and one six in his unbeaten 107

Marcus Trescothick's second century of the match was the highlight of a final day that ended in an inevitable draw between Warwickshire and Somerset.

After the Bears began the day on 156-3, Tony Frost (94) and Jonathan Trott (79) extended their partnership to 142.

But when Frost fell, it sparked a collapse which saw the hosts lose their last seven wickets for 58 runs.

Trescothick then smashed an unbeaten 107 from 117 balls, as Somerset reached 156-4 when the teams shook on a draw.

After almost two days of the game had been lost because of a wet outfield at Edgbaston, the main business of the final day was Somerset's quest for maximum bowling points.

Frost fell six runs short of a century when he was caught by wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter off the bowling of Alfonso Thomas (4-72).

Thomas then removed Tim Ambrose and Rikki Clarke, both for ducks, before Andy Caddick (2-67) accounted for Ant Botha and Trott.

Naqaash Tahir (23) and Chris Woakes (13) then dragged the hosts past the 250 mark for their second batting point, but both were dismissed by Charl Willoughby (4-37) to signal the end of the innings.

Trescothick then dominated the Somerset second innings - of the four wickets to fall, James Hildreth's 11 was the highest score - before the draw was agreed.

The 10 points earned leaves Somerset 22 points behind Durham at the top of Division One, but the Cidermen have played a game more.
