Honours ended even between Kent and Derbyshire on day one of the top-of-the-table clash in County Championship Division Two at Canterbury.

After the visitors won the toss, they were reduced to 233-9 with Wavell Hinds and Chris Rogers making half-centuries and James Tredwell taking 4-92.

But a last-wicket stand of 80 between Steffan Jones (53no) and Jake Needham (20) helped them reach 303 all out.

Joe Denly then fell to the last ball of the day as Kent closed on 49-1.

After Derbyshire won the toss, openers Rogers and Wayne Madsen took the score to 46, before Madsen fell lbw to Simon Cook.

Rogers and Garry Park then took the score to 68, but when Rogers was caught by Joe Denly off the bowling of Ryan McLaren for 53 and Park edged Tredwell's first ball to Justin Kemp at slip, the visitors were 96-3 at lunch.

Kent then picked up five wickets in the afternoon session, three of which fell to Tredwell, as only Hinds (74) provided any meaningful resistance.

And, when Tim Groenewald was caught behind by Geraint Jones off Wayne Parnell just after tea, it was left to Derbyshire's Jones and Needham to take the visitors past the 300 mark.

Paceman Jones, who was only playing because of the decision to rest Nantie Haywood, struck seven fours and one six before Amjad Khan brought an end to the last-wicket fun by having Needham caught behind.
