Amla's short spell with Essex is set to end due to Kaneira's imminent return
Hashim Amla hit his second century in three Championship matches as Essex reached 294-4 on day two of their clash with Leicestershire at Grace Road.
The South African Test star, who is a temporary overseas replacement for Danish Kaneira, made 118 in what is expected to be his last appearance.
He shared a 133-run partnership with John Maunders, before he departed for 56 after being caught off James Taylor.
Amla was eventually dispatched by James Allenby, who had him caught behind.
Matt Walker, who put on a 69-run stand with the South African, will resume on day three on 67 after making only his second half-century since joining from Kent in the winter.
Kaneira is set to return to Chelmsford one he has completed his international duty with Pakistan.
John Maunders told BBC Essex he was pleased after making 56 against his former county:
"It's nice to score a few runs but obviously the team come first, just short of 300-4 is a great position.
"It's good to bat with Amla, he's obviously a very gifted player, mentally strong, he's good to learn from."
