Weather halts Kent's bright start

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Surrey 386, Kent 152-0
(Surrey 4pts, Kent 3pts)
10 - 13 July 2009 (1100-1800 BST)

Kent openers Joe Denly and Rob Key had a promising 152-run opening partnership brought to a frustrating halt by bad light and then rain at The Oval.

Resuming on 342-8, Surrey's tail proved stubborn and it took Kent 75 minutes to eventually bowl out them out for 386, Chris Schofield making 54.

Denly and captain Key then set about the Surrey attack to secure their first century stand together this season.

When play was stopped on 152-0 from 40 overs, Denly was on 79 and Key 71.

The runs came as a welcome relief to Key who has endured a run drought stretching back three months.

He reached his half century in 69 balls, including eight fours.

Denly, who has enjoyed good form of late, hit his 50 in 76 balls and crossed the boundary seven times, twice with a six.

Key survived one appeal for a catch while his partner stood firm during a sustained appeal for lbw after the ball had pitched outside leg.

But their time at the crease came to an abrupt end when the rain came at the tea break and the umpires took the decision to abandon play.
