COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Northampton: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Northants 433-9dec, Derbyshire 371-4.(Northants 6pts, Derbys 7pts) 7-10 July 2009 (Play starts 1100 BST)
Wavell Hinds hit his second County Championship century of the summer |
Wavell Hinds and Daniel Redfern both hit their highest score for the county as Derbyshire hit back well on day three to reach 371-4 against Northants. Starting the day at 11-0, Derbyshire were well short of the 284 needed to avoid following on when they slumped to 133-3 just after lunch. But Hinds hit an unbeaten 133, backed by Redfern (95) as they transformed the game with a fourth-wicket stand of 237. Openers Chris Rogers (49) and Scott Stubbings (42) had earlier put on 82. Former West Indies batsman Hinds was the star of the day, the powerful left-hander smashing the home attack to all parts to record his second century of the season. And England Under-19 star Redfern also weighed in with a fine knock, surpassing his previous first-class best of 74 made against Gloucestershire at Chesterfield only a month ago. Redfern fell just before stumps, agonisingly close to his maiden hundred, trying to cut Northants captain Nicky Boje. But, despite his and Hinds' heroics, it seems only a contrived finish can rescue the game from finishing as a run-filled draw.
