Michael Powell struck his second County Championship century of the summer
Michael Powell's 102 helped Glamorgan pile on the runs against Essex on the second day of their County Championship Division One match at Chelmsford.
Resuming at 155-3 after a rain-halved first day, Powell's second ton of the summer paved the way to 515-9dec, Essex replying by the close on 34-0.
Powell helped put on 189 for the fifth wicket with visiting skipper Jamie Dalrymple (50).
And James Harris weighed in with an unbeaten 76 as Glamorgan's tail wagged.
On a pitch offering very little in the way of encouragement, Essex did not help their cause with some undisciplined bowling as the visitors post their highest total of the summer.
And Powell experienced few anxious moments as he recorded his fourth century against Essex - and the 25th of his first-class career.
He reached his hundred from 157 balls, with the aid of 16 fours, and looked so at ease that it came as something of a surprise when he guided a straightforward catch to John Maunders in the gully off seamer Graham Napier.
By then, his captain Dalrymple had reached 50 for the seventh time in 10 Championship innings this season.
But, although he then got out, Mark Wallace (37), Robert Croft(30) and Harris all mirrored the earlier example set by nightwatchman Adam Shantry's 38.
The only crumb of comfort for Essex was that openers Varun Chopra and John Maunders steered clear of trouble in the 10 overs they were forced to negotiate. But the home side still have an uphill task to reach the 366 needed to avoid being asked to follow on.-3
