COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Headingley: Yorkshire v Durham CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Yorkshire 64-1, Durham 178 (Yorkshire 3pts)10-13 July 2009 (Play starts 1100 BST)
England hopeful Rashid took three wickets with his spin against Durham |
Yorkshire's bowlers guided them into a strong position at the end of day one against Durham at Headingley. The visitors were all out for 178 with Dale Benkenstein making 62, while Adil Rashid and Ajmal Shahzad each took three wickets as Durham crumbled. Yorkshire then suffered an early wobble with the dismissal of Jacques Rudolph (5) with just nine runs on the board. However Joe Sayers (34) and Anthony McGrath (14) pressed on to guide the Tykes to 64-1 at stumps. Durham arrived at Headingley on the back of an unbeaten record in the County Championship, and a convincing defeat of Worcestershire at the Riverside a week ago. However, after Michael Di Venuto and Mark Stoneman put on an opening partnership of 47, Durham struggled to build on the start, slumping to 82-5 with the quick wickets of Kyle Coetzer and Gordon Muchall both coming for a duck off the bowling of Shahzad. | SPIN AND YOU'RE WINNING ADIL RASHID - 3-32 from 18 overs GRAEME SWANN - 86-0 from 28 overs MONTY PANESAR - 78-1 from 27 overs |
Also to go during that spell were big hitter Ian Blackwell and Di Venuto, who made a century just seven days previously, both falling to Rashid, who enjoyed a more profitable afternoon than his fellow England spin colleagues Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar did in Cardiff. Little resistance was offered by Liam Plunkett (3) and the usually prolific Phil Mustard (7) as Durham's tail was exposed, and despite a dogged effort from Mitchell Claydon (20), Steve Harmison became the third duck of the innings to finish off the visitors at 178 all out. Meanwhile the Tykes bowlers returned impressive figures, with former England swing bowler Matthew Hoggard netting two wickets for 36, while Naved-ul-Hasan returned one for 38. Sent into bat, Rudolph's dismissal was a disappointment, coming off the bowling of former Yorkshire player Mitchell Claydon. But, with nine wickets in hand and three days in hand, Yorkshire look well poised to inflict a first defeat of the summer for the county champions.
