TWENTY20 CUP SOUTH DIVISION, Lord's: Sussex 130-4 beat Middlesex 127-8 by six wickets (Sussex 2pts, Middlesex 0pts)
Nash hit two sixes and four fours in his unbeaten 35 |
Sussex batsman Chris Nash hit 26 off one over as he stunningly climaxed his side's six-wicket Twenty20 Cup victory against holders Middlesex at Lord's. When Chris Silverwood started what was the penultimate over, Sussex still needed 24 to win. But Nash belted him for two sixes and three fours, ending on 35 out of 130-4 in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 47 with Middlesex old boy Ed Joyce (41no). Earlier, Gareth Berg (30) top scored for Middlesex as they closed on 127-8. Middlesex finish bottom of the South Division while Sussex's win sealed second place behind Kent. And, as the best of the three second-placed sides in the three divisions, that earned them a home game against Warwickshire in the last eight. After winning the toss, Middlesex lost Billy Godleman and Eoin Morgan cheaply before Nick Compton and Dawid Malan (both 24) shared 33 for the third wicket. Compton was caught at deep midwicket by Joyce off the bowling of Mike Yardy. And Luke Wright then picked up the wickets of Malan and Tyron Henderson before Berg, dropped on nought by Yardy, took Middlesex to respectability. The Sussex reply was delayed by rain and then got off to a bad start when David Burton removed Wright and Rory Hamilton-Brown with the visitors having moved to just 18. Murray Goodwin followed soon after, before Dwayne Smith (33) shared fourth-wicket stand of of 55 with Joyce. When the former West Indian international was trapped lbw by Malan, Middlesex looked to be favourites, but Nash's fireworks saw Sussex home.
