Drogba's extraordinary outburst was seen by millions watching on TV

Chelsea have detailed their reasons for appealing against the fine and bans imposed by Uefa after May's Champions League semi-final defeat by Barcelona.

Striker Didier Drogba was banned for six games and defender Bosingwa for four, with the club was fined £85,000.

A Chelsea statement read: "We believe these punishments are unnecessarily harsh given the circumstances.

"Honest and sincere apologies were made swiftly after these regrettable incidents occurred."

The Blues were stunned by the severity of the suspensions following a bitter 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of their semi-final, which saw them eliminated on the away goals rule.

They felt referee Tom Henning Ovrebo should have awarded several penalties, and blamed him for their exit.

The Chelsea statement added: "We would reiterate that the players and the club are acutely aware of our responsibilities towards setting a good example as role models and upholding the values of the game."

Drogba swore into live TV cameras in front of millions of people, later apologising for his behaviour, while he and several other players surrounded the Norwegian official after the final whistle.

The striker was given a six-match ban, with two games suspended for two years, for his row with referee Tom Henning Ovreb.

Bosingwa was hit with a four-match ban, one suspended, after calling Ovrebo a "thief".

The £85,000 fine was for improper conduct by players and fans.

Andres Iniesta's late away goal gave Barca a place in the final where they beat Manchester United to win the prestigious trophy.
