Read shared 53 for the sixth wicket with Samit Patel
Lancashire scraped to an 11-run win against Nottinghamshire in the Twenty20 Cup at Old Trafford despite a half century from Chris Read.
After being asked to bat, the hosts totalled 151-6 in their 20 overs, with Francois du Plessis (31) top scoring.
Notts got off to a terrible start in reply, with Tom Smith (3-20) and Glenn Chapple (2-29) reducing them to 19-5.
Captain Read (58 not out) and Samit Patel (35) then led the fightback, but Notts were to fall short on 140-7.
The result leaves Nottinghamshire still looking for their first win in this year's competition, while Lancashire are level with Derbyshire at the top of the North Division with two wins from two games.
Lancashire all-rounder Tom Smith told BBC Radio Lancashire:
"At 19-5 they had nothing to lose, but fortunately we had enough runs to get over the line.
"We're batting well together and getting into a winning habit.
"We thought 140 would be a par score, we were happy with the score we got and it was a good team performance."
Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"We have done a lot of good things over two matches.
"But obviously our batting at the top of the order has been a major problem.
"We are lacking in the batting department at the moment and we need to get a win on the board as soon as possible."
