FRIENDS PROVIDENT TROPHY, GROUP C, Hove Sussex 269-7 beat Yorkshire 209 by 60 runs (Sussex 2pts, Yorkshire 0pts)
Mike Yardy hit 68 and took the key wicket of Anthony McGrath |
Sussex booked their place in this Saturday's Friends Provident Trophy quarter-finals with a 60-run win over nearest rivals Yorkshire at Hove. Skipper Mike Yardy (68) and opener Ed Joyce (47) dominated a solid Sussex score of 269-7 from their 50 overs. Former England captain Michael Vaughan (66) and Yorkshire skipper Anthony McGrath (53) gave the Tykes hope in a third-wicket stand of 102. But Chris Nash (4-40) helped Yorkshire slump from 124-2 to 207 all out. Off-spinner Nash was only playing because of injury to Luke Wright. But he ended up with a one-day best, including the wicket of former England captain Michael Vaughan, who scored his second half-century in this season's competition before being caught at short midwicket as he tried to force the pace. The key wicket was that of McGrath, who was removed by opposing skipper Yardy, who had him caught behind cutting, a juggling catch by stand-in wicketkeeper Ben Brown. Having definitely secured runners-up spot in Group C, Sussex could still win the group and earn home advantage in Saturday's quarter-finals. But they must beat Surrey at The Oval on Tuesday and hope unbeaten leaders Gloucestershire slip up in their final qualifying game at the Riverside against Durham.
