Smith's 87 not out was his best score in one-day cricket

Tom Smith hit his one-day best as Lancashire booked a FP Trophy quarter-final place with a rain-affected eight-wicket win over Glamorgan.

Smith (87no) shared an unbroken third-wicket stand of 132 with Mark Chilton (58no) as they comfortably reached their revised target of 208.

Glamorgan were well placed at 122-1 before the rain thanks to Mark Cosgrove (68) and Michael O'Shea (49).

But they collapsed to 172-8 after play resumed, Oliver Newby taking 4-41.

The three-and-a-half hour rain interruption saw the game reduced to 31 overs per side and badly affected Glamorgan, even if it resulted in Lancashire's target being extended by 35 runs.

Glamorgan were flying beforehand as Cosgrove and O'Shea put on 116 for the first wicket before Sajid Mahmood had O'Shea caught behind.

Their hopes of posting a big total after the resumption were dashed by the quickfire losses of Cosgrove, Michael Powell, Tom Maynard and captain Jamie Dalrymple.

Adding just 50 from those final 10 overs never looked enough from the moment Smith and Paul Horton raced out of the traps at the beginning of Lancashire's reply, scoring at 6.7 an over in their opening stand of 68.

There was a glimmer of hope for the home side when James Harris removed Horton and Ashwell Prince in consecutive overs.

But Smith and Chilton, who reached his 50 in just 36 balls, saw Lancashire over the winning line with three overs to spare for their sixth victory in seven games in this year's competition.
