FRIENDS PROVIDENT TROPHY, GROUP B, Canterbury Middlesex 322-5 beat Kent 242 by 80 runs(Middlesex 2pts, Kent 0pts)
Ireland's Morgan is in England's initial squad for the ICC World Twenty20 |
Eoin Morgan and Nick Compton both hit centuries as Middlesex made their highest FP Trophy score in beating Kent by 80 runs at Canterbury. Morgan (161) and Compton (131) both hit one-day bests and shared a one-day county record third-wicket stand of 277 to ease their side to 322-5. Geraint Jones hit a quickfire 57 and Justin Kemp 69 in Kent's attempt at a run chase. But they had little support as the home side were all out for 242. Opener Compton and Morgan came together with their side in early trouble on 31-2 after Australian run machine Phillip Hughes had been bowled by Wayne Parnell for 12 and Owais Shah was removed by Azhar Mahmood for a second-ball duck. But they soon had Middlesex motoring towards their record 50-over score, comfortably beating the county's previous third-wicket one-day mark of 165 set by Mark Ramprakash and John Carr against Nottinghamshire at Lord's in 1993. | 606: DEBATE |
And the partnership certainly helped erase memories of Middlesex's previous outing in this competition when they were bowled out for only 65 by Somerset. Morgan, a surprise inclusion in England's provisional 30-man squad for June's ICC World Twenty20, was also in sight of making the county's highest individual one-day score when he fell for 161, two short of Andrew Strauss' record of 163. Kent's hopes of chasing down the target were soon in tatters as they had lost captain Rob Key, Martin van Jaarsveld and Joe Denly by the time they had 40 on the board. And although Jones and then Kemp tried to keep Kent in with a chance, they ultimately fell well short.
