Nottinghamshire's Australian batsman Adam Voges hit 95 to keep his side in control of their County Championship match at Old Trafford.

Bad light accounted for 20 overs but despite the loss of play the visitors cruised past Lancashire's first innings total to end on 263-6, a lead of 74.

Lancashire had looked like fighting back as Voges fell lbw three overs before tea to Oliver Newby.

But Chris Read's unbeaten 48 re-established Notts' command.

Left-hander Voges hit his 95 off 174 balls and reached his half-century off 109 deliveries.

The 29-year-old shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 67 with his skipper Read before falling to Newby.

The Lancashire paceman, who was making his county debut in this fixture, ended the day with 3-79 from 23 overs.

Both he and Glen Chapple claimed two wickets before lunch, the first to go being Mark Wagh for 17 to the Lancashire skipper.

Bilal Shafayat plodded to 34 from 117 balls before he fell to Steven Croft in the slips off a rising Newby delivery.

Ali Brown was dismissed by Tom Smith for 21 when he was caught by Paul Horton at first slip early on in the afternoon session.

After Voges was dismissed, England spinner Graeme Swann came to the crease to face Newby and was promptly dropped first ball by a flailing Luke Sutton.

But it was not an expensive miss as Swann fell to Chapple moments before tea, with Horton taking his second catch of the day.

There was another drop shortly after the break as Kyle Hogg put down Read at mid-on off Chapple's bowling.

The Notts skipper will resume at the crease on Friday with Paul Franks, who is unbeaten on 22.

Lancashire fast bowler Oliver Newby told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"Adam Voges managed to get away from us a little bit but other than that I thought we bowled really well.

"We've talked about not letting the run rate get away from us, and Notts have gone at two, two-and-a-half an over, which is really good considering it's a four-day game.

"We've just tried to hit our areas and get our wickets when they came."
