Newman's century has given Surrey a chance against Derbyshire

A Scott Newman century kept Surrey in their Championship match at Derbyshire after the home side built up a useful first-innings lead.

Resuming on 152-7, Derbyshire were eventually dismissed for 274, a lead of 143, with Greg Smith going on from his overnight 35 to make an unbeaten 94.

Newman led the fightback with his 14th first-class ton.

But he eventually fell for 124 just before the close with Surrey 213-3, 70 runs in front.
