Wagg takes career-best for Derbys

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Derby
Derbyshire v Surrey

22-25 April (Play starts 1100 BST)
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Surrey 131 all out, Derbyshire 152-7(Surrey 2pts, Derbyshire 3pts)

Graham Wagg
Wagg's previous career best was 6-38

Derbyshire's Graham Wagg took a first-class career-best 6-35 as 17 wickets fell on the opening day at the County Ground against Surrey.

Wagg's haul saw him claim all the visitors' front five batsmen as Surrey were bowled out for only 131 after winning the toss and deciding to bat.

But then Pedro Collins responded for Surrey with a four-wicket burst, reducing Derbyshire to 88-7 in reply.

But Wagg (22 no) then helped Greg Smith (35 no) Derbyshire recover to 152-7.

Despite the batsmen's struggles (the scores would have been even lower but for a total of 59 extras in the day), the pitch liaison officer reported no problems with the surface.

It was largely swing that caused the clatter of wickets, as no batsman managed to reach 50.

A hip injury had prevented Wagg bowling in last week's opener at Chelmsford but he wasted no time in showing why he was Derbyshire's leading wicket taker with 57 scalps last season.

He exploited a grassy pitch which provided pace and bounce to take the first four wickets in the opening 13 overs of a sunny morning.

Surrey, again without the suspended Mark Ramprakash and the injured Mark Butcher, failed to recover.

At least Jonathan Batty showed some resistance, Surrey's former skipper top-scoring with 36 .

Wagg had to leave the field with cramp after ending Batty's resistance, leg before. But Smith took over, wrapping up the innings with his third wicket.

Derbyshire were soon struggling as Surrey's pacemen hit back. But, having reduced them to 88-7, a dropped catch by Batty when Wagg was on just 4 proved costly.

And Smith and Wagg plundered some wayward bowling as Surrey's seamers lost their line, adding 64 in 15 overs to give Derbyshire a lead of 21.
