Jim Troughton thwarted Hampshire with an unbeaten century as Warwickshire fought back at Edgbaston.

He came to the crease with the Bears in trouble on 12-2 in reply to the visitors' 379.

But he made exactly 100 and shared in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 104 with Tim Ambrose (47) by the close as the Bears ended day two on 224-4.

They remain 155 behind Hampshire, who added 69 to their overnight 310-7, with Nic Pothas finishing on 122 not out.

Pothas had started the day unbeaten on 83 and extended his eighth-wicket partnership with Chris Tremlett to 70 before the paceman had his middle stump removed by Chris Woakes.

David Balcombe then fell lbw to Boyd Rankin but Pothas had time to reach his century in style, thrashing Darren Maddy to the cover boundary.

Rikki Clarke finally wrapped up Hampshire's innings when he had James Tomlinson caught at short leg after a final wicket stand of 35.

Warwickshire were soon in trouble when Darren Maddy edged Dominic Cork to slip and Tony Frost was run out by a direct hit from substitute fielder David Griffiths.

Jonathan Trott perished to a loose shot at Tomlinson and England batsman Ian Bell gloved a rising delivery from Tremlett to Cork at slip to depart for 29 with the score on 120-4.

But Troughton and Ambrose dug in to see the Bears through to the close, with Troughton reaching his 15th first-class century just before the close off 172 balls after being dropped by Liam Dawson on 99.
