Vaughan is yet to make a half-century this season as he bids for a Test recall

Steve Harmison dealt Michael Vaughan's Test recall hopes a blow by claiming his wicket on day two at the Riverside.

The Durham paceman had his England team-mate adjudged caught behind for 24 after finding some extra bounce.

It was left to Gerard Brophy (75) and Tim Bresnan (40) to rescue Yorkshire from 142-4, but both were out late on as they reached 264-6 at stumps.

Earlier, Phil Mustard was left stranded on 94 not out as Durham were dismissed for 362 after resuming on 303-7.

Mustard had been 62 not out overnight and twice reverse-swept Adil Rashid for four in a bid to reach three figures before he ran out of partners.

He had good support from Callum Thorp, who made 42 out of a stand of 86 before being caught and bowled off Matthew Hoggard's fourth ball of the morning.

Hoggard also removed Graham Onions on his way to figures of 4-82 and Mustard's hopes of a ton were dashed when Rashid trapped Harmison lbw.

Andrew Gale opened for Yorkshire alongside Jacques Rudolph because of Joe Sayers' shoulder injury and lasted only 24 balls before being bowled by Onions for 11.

Rudolph and Vaughan progressed serenely, with the former England captain looking completely at ease in front of watching selector James Whitaker before umpire Nick Cook ruled he had gloved Harmison behind to Mustard.

Four overs later Harmison had Rudolph caught behind for 57, while Thorp removed Anthony McGrath for 27 to leave Yorkshire in trouble.

Brophy and Bresnan added 105 for the fifth wicket, but both fell with the score on 247.

First Brophy was stumped down the leg side off Ian Blackwell and in the following over Bresnan inside-edged a Liam Plunkett delivery on to his own stumps.

BBC Radio Newcastle's Martin Emmerson reviews day two at the Riverside:

"The morning ended in frustrating fashion for Durham's Phil Mustard, who ran out of partners when he was on 94.

"But it had been an heroic knock from the wicketkeeper who had entered the fray on day one with his side struggling on 129-5.

"Michael Vaughan was also left frustrated when he departed for 24, given caught behind by umpire Nick Cook after trying to get out of the way of a Steve Harmison bouncer.

"Vaughan clearly gave the impression he did not touch the ball.

"The final act of frustration for the visitors came when they lost Gerard Brophy and Tim Bresnan with the score on 247 after they had put together a partnership of 105 together.

"Durham shaded day two but there is still plenty of cricket left in this game."
