Centuries from Adil Rashid and David Wainwright put Yorkshire in control of Sussex, who ended day two with a 375-run first-innings deficit on 25-3. The Tykes, seeking to edge above Sussex in a scrap for Division One survival, resumed on 84-6 at Hove but Rashid and Wainwright shared 140 in 40 overs. Wainwright reached his maiden ton with a four, sharing 82 with Matthew Hoggard before Yorkshire declared on 400-9. Hoggard and Rashid then took wickets as Sussex's relegation fears intensified. Last season's champions began the final match of the season four points clear of Yorkshire, but defeat could well leave them reliant on Kent losing to Durham. Conditions were much brighter on day two but Sussex followers will be wondering how Yorkshire were allowed to reach 400, and also how their side are going to get near that total from their perilous position. Rashid began a day of dominance for the visitors by extending his partnership with Tim Bresnan to 80 in the morning session. It was not as if there were a string of dropped catches in the dominant ninth wicket stand as Rashid and Wainwright played chanceless, career-best knocks. Chris Adams did put down a tough diving chance when Bresnan had made 26, but the all-rounder was caught by the Sussex captain at slip off bat and pad when spinner Ollie Rayner came into the attack. Sussex also dismissed Richard Pyrah, well caught by Carl Hopkinson diving forward at point before lunch, but went wicketless in the afternoon session. Rashid cut Robin Martin-Jenkins to record his century with his seventh four, while Wainwright hooked the Sussex stalwart for six to move to 99, before slamming a full toss from Michael Yardy through the covers for four to reach three figures. Even the normally obdurate Hoggard played some expansive sweeps and drives as his side coasted to the magical 400 figure. Sussex were left with nine overs to face, and their day was rather summed up by Yardy and Hopkinson playing across full-length balls from Hoggard and nightwatchman Rayner falling for a first-ball duck to Rashid. To make matters worse, there was an injury scare for England wicketkeeper Matt Prior, who left the field in the evening session with a hand injury.
