COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One The Oval, day three: Nottinghamshire 532 beat Surrey 267 & 122 by an innings and 152 runs
Scott Newman was comprehensively bowled by Darren Pattinson |
Nottinghamshire went top of the County Championship table as they beat Surrey by an innings and 153 runs at The Oval. Surrey produced a wretched batting display to be bowled out for 122. The hosts, whose relegation was confirmed on Thursday, went down to their 12th defeat of a Championship campaign which yielded no wins at all. Nottinghamshire took maximum points and with rivals Durham and Somerset struggling to force wins, they look set to start the final round on top. Surrey have had an appalling season, and their batting under cloudless skies on Friday was shocking, even taking into account the absence through injury of Jon Batty. The only member of the top eight to score more than 12 was youngster Matthew Spriegel, who made 42 - though he was dropped on 26 off the bowling of Graeme Swann, who cashed in with three wickets. Darren Pattinson gained two early blows in successive overs, having Mark Ramprakash caught by Will Jefferson at the second attempt at second slip and yorking Scott Newman middle stump to reduce Surrey to 17-3. A late flourish from Shoaib Akhtar brought him 32 from 19 balls with five fours and a six but the match ended 15 minutes after tea. Earlier, Notts were finally bowled out for 532 from an overnight 420-5, Swann enjoying himself with 82 off 88 balls and putting on 72 with Mark Ealham for the eighth wicket.
