COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division Two, Kidderminster (day three): Middlesex 321 & 67-2 beat Worcestershire 265 & 122 by eight wickets
England opener Andrew Strauss had a terrific match at Kidderminster |
Middlesex wrapped up an eight-wicket victory at Kidderminster early on day three but opponents Worcestershire earned promotion from Division Two. Andrew Strauss's unbeaten 28 saw Middlesex coast to a target of 67. But Worcestershire, who took just five points from the defeat, had their progress from Division One confirmed by events in another match at Chelmsford. Essex failed to take maximum bowling points against Warwickshire, who are on course to go up with Worcestershire. Having been hustled out for 122 on Thursday, Worcestershire knew the game was all but up when the third day dawned in their final Championship match of the season. In the event it took Strauss, who hit 101 in the first innings, less than an hour to guide the visitors to victory. The only men dismissed were Billy Godleman, lbw to Dilhara Fernando for four, and Owais Shah. He cracked 22 off 15 balls before hitting Chris Whelan to mid-off with the victory target just two runs away. | You build your success around individual performances within the team ethic, and everyone this season has contributed |
Worcestershire captain Vikram Solanki, following his fourth season in charge of the club, told BBC Sport: "We have played very well. The group of guys can be proud of the way they have gone about their business. "I don't want to sound arrogant but we have deserved our success as I feel we are one of the best teams in the division. "We are disappointed by the way we have finished, but that should not take away from what a great job the guys have done.
