County Championship, D1, Edgbaston, day three (close): Warwickshire 476-9d v Derbyshire 462-7
New skipper Chris Rogers led by example with a magnificent unbeaten 237 as Derbyshire closed day three only 14 runs behind Warwickshire at 462-7. Resuming on 51, Rogers, who replaced Rikki Clarke at the helm this month, hit a total of 32 fours and a six in his top score in two spells at Derby. He shared 176 with Paul Borrington, the highest opening partnership in Championship cricket this summer. Rogers, caught off a no-ball on 154, went on to his fifth double century. The opening stand lasted for 51 overs before Borrington, who has passed fifty in each of his three away fixtures this season, fell playing across a full toss from spinner Ian Salisbury. Rogers reached his hundred in the first over after lunch with a straight drive that gave him his 16th four, but England U-19 international Dan Redfern was caught at second slip for 11. Derbyshire still needed 120 to avoid the follow-on, and Wavell Hinds hit two sixes in his 40 before holing out to long-on to give the Bears their first bowling point. Rogers edged Boyd Rankin to second slip but the Irish seamer had over-stepped, and Greg Smith then helped add 68 before Chris Woakes eventually hit back with two wickets in three balls. Smith was lbw and Clarke's mediocre campaign continued when Woakes comfortably
held a top edge in his follow through. Salisbury picked up two more wickets but Rogers remained to record the first double ton by a Derbyshire player against Warwickshire.
