County Championship, D1, Scarborough, day three (close): Yorkshire 457 v Kent 227 & 273-5
Kent still have work to do to make the match safe at Scarborough, after closing day three 43 ahead at 273-5. Yorkshire skipper Darren Gough and last man Deon Kruis hit a six apiece as the Tykes compiled 457, a lead of 230. Joe Denly and Neil Dexter shared 132 in 34 overs, and Martin van Jaarsveld helped Dexter to another century stand. Dexter recorded his second Championship century, but seamer Rana Naved-ul-Hasan rattled the top of his off-stump and picked up two more quick wickets. Yorkshire resumed on 409-7 but Adil Rashid fell lbw to the sixth ball from Amjad Khan, which nipped back and trapped him lbw. In his next over Khan had Matthew Hoggard caught at second slip. The final pair added a useful 40 before Gough swung off-spinner James Tredwell to Rob Key at square-leg. Kent skipper Key was an early casualty, edging a good delivery from Hoggard to first slip, but Denly had a reprieve on 17 when Andrew Gale dropped his carved stroke at third man off Naved. The Denly-Dexter partnership added a further 100 runs before it was broken shortly before tea, when another beauty from Hoggard nipped away and was caught at second slip. Van Jaarsveld raced to fifty from 78 balls, taking consecutive fours through the covers off Gough, but after Naved ousted Dexter, he yorked nightwatchman Martin Saggers in nhis next over and had Darren Stevens caught at short-leg. Van Jaarsveld held firm to finish unbeaten on 61 but will need more on the final day.
