Durham close in against Hampshire

County Championship, D1, Basingstoke, day two (close):
Hampshire 96 & 108-5 v Durham 156 & 179

Durham's quest to return to the top of the table took another positive step as Hampshire closed another remarkable day 132 short of their target at 108-5.

After 16 wickets fell on the opening day at May's Bounty, Basingstoke, a further 19 went on day two.

Hampshire quickly lost their last four wickets and were all out for 96, their lowest total anywhere for eight years, Mark Davies with a career-best 8-24.

James Tomlinson took 5-62 in Durham's 179 but the tourists remained on top.

There was no addition to the overnight Hampshire total when Callum Thorp dismissed Liam Dawson first ball - the fifth wickets to fall with the score on 65 - and Davies promptly wrapped up the tail.

Tomlinson also found the seaming conditions to his liking, dismissing Australian opener Michael Di Venuto, who fell for the second time without scoring.

Leg-spinner Imran Tahir collected four wickets as Hampshire were set a target of 240, comfortably the highest of the match.

Callum Thorp quickly got amongst the wickets as the home side's run chase began nervously.

Sean Ervine gave Hampshire hope to share an unbroken 31 with Dawson, one of the highest partnerships of the match, but will need to produce something special to avoid defeat.
