County Championship, D1, Basingstoke: Hampshire 65-6 v Durham 156 all out (day one, stumps)
A dramatic late spell from Durham's Mark Davies put the visitors in control after a day of falling wickets in their County Championship game at Hampshire. Davies took 5-24 and Hampshire lost four wickets without adding a run to close in desperate trouble at 65-6. Sixteen wickets fell on the first day of the first match to be staged at Basingstoke in eight years. Dmitri Mascarenhas took 5-46 and Imran Tahir 3-5 as Durham were bowled out of 156, with Will Smith top-scoring on 70. Smith struck 70 with eight boundaries before he was last out as third-placed Durham missed vital batting bonus points in their quest for the Division One title. They were in trouble from the moment they lost Australian opener Michael Di Venuto in the first over to James Tomlinson. Mascarenhas then dismissed Michael Stoneman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Phil Mustard and Paul Wiseman. When Liam Plunkett was bowled by Mascarenhas it left Durham on 96-7. Callum Thorp and Smith shared an important stand of 43 for the eighth wicket but Imran Tahir was introduced and promptly cleared up the final three wickets. Durham's plight looked even worse as Hampshire got to 48-0 before they too collapsed. Davies removed Michael Carberry and opening partner James Adams before the Hampshire wickets tumbled. Three of them fell to Davies, while Paul Wiseman grabbed his first wicket when Michael Lumb offered a simple catch to Michael Di Venuto. With conditions favouring the seamers, Hampshire will have been glad to come off in the 35th over.
