Murray Goodwin and Carl Hopkinson put on 194 to help Sussex overcome a woeful start on day one of their Championship match against Hampshire at Arundel.

Two wickets for James Tomlinson, one for David Balcome and a run out saw Hampshire reduce their local rivals, the reigning champions, to 25-4.

But Hopkinson showed sublime composure to record his first Championship ton.

Goodwin went on to make a majestic 115 not out as he and Robin Martin-Jenkins (69no) led Sussex to 316-5 at stumps.
