County Championship D1, day one (close): Somerset 427 v Kent 13-3
Zander de Bruyn led a hugely impressive batting display by Somerset as the hosts took total control on day one against Kent at Taunton. Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick had both hit half-centuries before made 81 including 10 fours and a six. Peter Trego and Ian Blackwell helped Somerset reach 427 all out and then their seamers continued the assault. Charl Willoughby and Steffan Jones removed Kent's opening three batsmen to leave the visitors reeling on 13-3. They only needed to navigate five overs but lost Joe Denly, nightwatchman Martin Saggers and skipper Robert Key with Willoughby claiming 2-6 and Jones 1-7. Kent also struggled with the ball - off-spinner James Tredwell was hit for seven sixes in picking up 2-94 runs and seamer Robbie Joseph sent down 12 no-balls. Their cause was not helped by Yasir Arafat missing most of the day after leaving the field with stomach cramps. Trescothick and Langer got Somerset off to a superb start, taking 63 off the first 10 overs on a greenish pitch offering precious little movement. Former England opener Trescothick breezed to his half-century off 68 balls but pushed at a ball from Saggers and was picked up in the slips by Justin Kemp. Although Langer swiftly followed Trescothick and James Hildreth fell to Saggers before lunch, Somerset continued to play positively after the re-start through de Bruyn and Trego, who added 120 in 21 overs. Trego hit two sixes and seven fours in a 54-ball half-century, while De Bruyn followed centuries against Yorkshire and Durham with another fine innings. The fall of Trego came on 244, but there was no respite for Kent as Blackwell arrived and, despite losing De Bruyn just before tea, Blackwell became the fifth batsman to reach a half-century. Craig Kieswetter made 35 before chipping a catch to short mid-on and the second new ball accounted for Steffan Jones, Ben Phillips and Alfonso Thomas.
