Yorkshire slip to defeat at Kent

County Championship D1, Canterbury, day four (close):
Kent 467 & 142-7 beat Yorkshire 410 & 196 by three wickets

Kent 22 points, Yorkshire 8 points

Martin van Jaarsveld's second-innings 41 helped steer Kent to an anticipated victory over Yorkshire at Canterbury.

Yasir Arafat's fine all-round effort on day three left the hosts needing just 140 to win and they reached their target with three wickets to spare.

Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took 3-24 off 4.3 overs and Matthew Hoggard 2-27 off 11 to give Yorkshire hope.

But Van Jaarsveld set up the win before Geraint Jones (20no) and Arafat (19no) did enough to close it out.

Kent's started the final day when Joe Denly took three boundaries off Tim Bresnan's first over, but the opener then edged to slip off Hoggard, who then squared up Rob Key with one that nipped away off the seam, brushed the edge and flew though to Gerard Brophy.

James Tredwell and Darren Stevens went just before lunch to Adil Rashid (2-46) to increase pressure on Kent's middle order.

South African pair Van Jaarseveld and Justin Kemp led their side to 101-4 at lunch but Yorkshire hit back, taking three wickets for seven runs after the interval.

Van Jaarsveld went leg before to a Naved slower ball with the first delivery after lunch and then, five balls later, Kemp edged through to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy.

With 32 still needed, Naved had his former Pakistan team-mate Azhar Mahmood caught behind off a thin edge and, at 108-7, Kent were in real danger of relinquishing their winning position.

But man-of-the-match Arafat and Geraint Jones kept their cool, teaming up in an unbroken eighth-wicket stand that added 34 in five overs to see their side home.
