County Championship D1, Canterbury, day two: Close Kent 298 for 6 v Yorkshire 410 all outCaptain Rob Key's first championship hundred of the summer kept Kent in touch with Yorkshire on day two. The former England right-hander hit an unbeaten 122 from 211 balls with 15 fours as the hosts reached 298 for six in reply to Yorkshire's total of 410. Resuming on 359-5, Yorkshire went on to reach 400 and maximum bonus points but Azhar Mahmood's six for 55 helped wrap up the visitors' innings. After a brisk start, Kent lost five for 58, before Key made his stand. Yorkshire's overnight century-maker, Jacques Rudolph, eventually went after four hours for 129 from 210 balls, when edging an attempted leg-glance off Mahmood to the keeper. And the visitors' last pair, Tim Bresnan and Deon Kruis, scrambled a single to see their side to 400, but it was Kent and Mahmood - with an excellent stint of 5-10 in 28 balls from the Pavilion End - who were happiest after the morning session. In only their second first-class game in a month, Kent started at Twenty20 Cup pace as Key and in-form opening partner Joe Denly cracked 12 boundaries in as many overs to post 50 in 37 minutes. The first-wicket pair added 68 in 13 overs before Denly, on 48, fell leg before to Matthew Hoggard four balls before lunch. After James Tredwell, who added 135 in 39 overs with Key, was caught at short leg to go for 48, Kent lost five wickets for 58, three of them to young leg-spinner Adil Rashid. Key, however, kept his cool to move to three figures from 174 balls, including 13 fours, easily surpassing his season's best championship score of 79, against Nottinghamshire in April. He lost Geraint Jones for 10 just before stumps when the ex-Test wicketkeeper fell leg before to an off-cutter from Rana Naved, but Key and Mahmood, with a quick-fire 21, saw Kent though to the close only two runs short of their third batting bonus point.
