County Championship D1, The Rose Bowl, day two (close): Hampshire 293 v Nottinghamshire 337-7 Match scorecard
Matt Wood made his highest score for Nottinghamshire since joining in the close season to enable his side to build a vital lead at the Rose Bowl. Wood made 77 and Mark Wagh 66 as the visitors overcame Hampshire's first innings 293 to lead by 44 with three first-innings wickets remaining. Notts overcame the early loss of Will Jefferson to seamer Chris Tremlett as Wagh and Wood put on 149 in 38 overs. England hopeful Tremlett finished with 2-65 but Notts edged to 337-7. Wagh should have been dismissed before he had got off the mark but Michael Lumb put him down off a straightforward chance at first slip off the persevering Tremlett. At one stage Nottinghamshire were powerfully placed at 173 for one but then the match was turned on its head briefly when Hampshire's recent signing Nantie Hayward dismissed them both in the space of four deliveries. Thereafter, Adam Voges, Bilal Shafayat and Paul Franks all got in and then out as the scoring became rather attritional. But with Chris Read and Andre Adams unbeaten at the close, the visitors will be hopeful of building a possible match-winning lead on day three.
