Cork haul puts Notts in trouble

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Old Trafford
Day three (stumps): Lancashire (384 & 146-4) v Nottinghamshire (304)

Seamer Dominic Cork's haul of 3-60 put Lancashire on top against Nottinghamshire despite a gritty display by the visitors' Adam Voges.

Voges scored 55 either side of a visit to hospital after being hit by a Cork delivery as Notts made 304, 80 short of Lancashire's first innings total.

At stumps on day three, Lancashire were 146-4 in their second innings, helped by Paul Horton's second half-century.

That was his sixth score of over 50 in nine Championship games this season.

Voges and Mark Wagh put on 112 for Notts' third wicket, but once the Australian was forced to retire hurt, the innings lost momentum.

Wagh gave Oliver Newby a chance just after Voges' retirement, but the catch was dropped. However, it was not long before he was heading back to the pavilion.

Six runs short of a 24th first-class century, he was bowled by Steven Croft as he tried to whip a straight ball to mid-wicket.

Cork then had Chris Read caught at slip and Graeme Swann adjudged lbw in consecutive overs, both without scoring, and despite Samit Patel's brief flurry of resistance, two more quick wickets meant Notts had lost five wickets for just 23 runs.

Voges returned from hospital to resume his innings, and Paul Franks made an unbeaten 40 to earn Notts a third batting point, but Cork brought matters to a close when he took out Charlie Shreck's middle stump.

By the close, Lancashire had extended their lead to 226, losing four second-innings wickets.

Iain Sutcliffe was caught out for 17, Mal Loye's attempted reverse sweep saw him caught for 24 and Patel claimed the scalp of Lou Vincent.

Horton, who made 64 in the first innings, was starting to look on course for a considerably bigger total in the second innings until he played on to Paul Franks for 60 just before stumps.
