COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE Old Trafford, day three of four: Lancashire 143 & 293 bt Durham 114 & 90 by 232 runs Points: Lancs 17, Durham 3
Anderson and Flintoff could both be on England duty next week |
England paceman James Anderson took 5-46 as Lancashire skittled Durham for only 90 to wrap up a 232-run victory. Anderson ripped through the middle and lower order after the visitors resumed on 28-3, chasing an unlikely 323. He trapped Mark Davies lbw, had Garry Park and Ben Harmison caught behind and Phil Mustard snapped up at slip before dismissing last man Steve Harmison. Top scorer Michael Di Venuto was run out for 24 as Lancashire romped to a first Championship win of the season. "I have captained Jimmy a few times, and it's very hard to get the ball out of his hands on a day like today. The more he bowls, the better he gets," said Lancashire skipper Stuart Law. "He is confident in his action, his body is fine. When he is like that he just gets better and better." Anderson's day did not begin auspiciously, however, as he dropped a regulation catch at slip to deny fellow England star Andrew Flintoff a fourth wicket when he found the edge of night-watchman Mark Davies's bat. Flintoff was again frustrated as Mohammad Yousuf just failed to grasp a difficult opportunity when Di Venuto pushed to short-leg. But Anderson soon trapped Davies playing across the line, and Park nicked behind to give wicket-keeper Luke Sutton his fourth catch of five in the innings. Mark Chilton's direct hit from cover then ran out Di Venuto after Mustard sent him back, before Mustard edged Anderson high to Law at second slip. Harmison flashed another catch behind, Mitch Claydon was lbw to Sajid Mahmood, who then took a simple catch at mid-off to put the seal on a miserable effort from Durham 20 minutes before lunch on day three. After the game, Law backed Flintoff's inclusion in the England squad for next week's first Test against New Zealand - despite his failure to score in either innings against Durham. "People are saying he's not scoring enough runs. He's working his utmost to get that right. He's one shot away from being back. But his bowling is out of this world," he said. "From an England point of view and an Andrew Flintoff point of view, I want him to go and be the best he can be in that side. "At one stage he was rated the best all-rounder. He can be that again - there's no doubt."
