COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO Derby, day one of four (close): Derbyshire 270 v Warwickshire 14-0
Spirited lower-order resistance saved Derbyshire on the opening day of their game against Warwickshire in Derby. The hosts were reeling on 128-7 after winning the toss but Jon Clare (66) and Tom Lungley (50) hit maiden first-class centuries in a stand of 81 in 29 overs. Clare and Charl Langeveldt, who made 24, attacked the new ball to help lift the total to 270, with Neil Carter taking 4-65 and Darren Maddy 3-46. Maddy and Ian Westwood negotiated seven overs to take Warwickshire to 14-0. After a solid start on a sunny morning, Derbyshire crumbled. Maddy trapped Chris Rogers lbw to end a stand of 47 and saw Steve Stubbings edge a wide ball low to first slip. Ian Bell took another catch when John Sadler was turned round by Jimmy Anyon and Carter did real damage in his second spell after lunch. Dominic Telo was lbw for 29 to a delivery which nipped back and Freddie Klokker went first ball when he tried to play around his pad. Jamie Pipe survived the hat-trick ball but was caught off a lifting delivery from Anyon and captain Rikki Clarke was lbw when he played across the line at Carter. Clare and Lungley halted the procession, with Clare surviving a dropped catch by Monde Zondeki at cover on 30 to bring up 50 from 113 balls. Lungley reached his fifty off 94 balls before Maddy trapped him lbw. Langeveldt smashed 24 off 17 balls as he and Clare punished some wayward bowling to collect 58 from seven overs until the South African carved Carter to third man, where Ian Salisbury held a swirling catch. Clare's excellent knock ended when he chipped Zondeki to deep mid-on.
