Cambridgeshire captain Gary Freear thinks his side can reach the next round of the Minor Counties Knockout Trophy despite defeat at Lincolnshire. The home side took victory in their final over, reaching 193-9 in reply to Cambridgeshire's 192-8 from 50 overs. And Freear told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "With five overs to go it looked like a great result for us but we switched off a little bit. "Two go through, so if we win our three games we still go through." It was Freear's first match as captain and he admitted he could have done some things differently. "Maybe I could have kept a couple of bowlers for the last couple of overs but then it's easy to look back on it and think that." | I still believe this is the best one-day side and I'm sure we'll win in the next game Cambridgeshire captain Gary Freear |
After Cambridgeshire had slipped to 9-3, Freear was delighted they managed to reach 192, thanks largely to Damian Brandy (34) and Tom Harvey (40). "I would have bit someone's arm off to get 192. The toss was always going to be quite important today with a damp wicket and overcast in the morning but the sun coming out this afternoon when they were batting. "If we'd won [the toss] the result would have been quite different. Saying that we got ourselves in a great position when we were fielding but we let it go in the last throws. "I let things drift a bit too long and it's gone on from there." Cambridgeshire are next in action against Dorset at March Town Cricket Club on 11 May. Freear said: "I still believe this is the best one-day side and I'm sure we'll win in the next game."
