Hoggard haul keeps Yorks on top

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE
Headingley, day three of four (close): Yorkshire 398 v Hampshire 159 & 136-4

Matthew Hoggard took his best county figures for five years but Yorkshire were hit by the weather as Hants closed 103 behind at 136-4 following on.

Hoggard, who had a long discussion with England national selector Geoff Miller before play began, ousted Nic Pothas with the first ball of the day.

He sent down a spell of 1-6 from four overs and finished with 6-57 as Hants were all out for 159, a deficit of 239.

Hoggard was wicketless in the follow-on as Michael Brown hit an unbeaten 58.

Hoggard, seeking a return to the England team for the first Test on 15 May, produced a perfect outswinger with the opening ball that Pothas edged low to Jacques Rudolph at first slip.

Rudolph then took another more straightforward catch to dismiss Greg Lamb off Deon Kruis.

Promising paceman Ajmal Shahzad dislodged Dimitri Mascarenhas when the England one-day all-rounder drove straight to short cover.

In the next over Tim Bresnan found the edge of Chris Tremlett's bat and Joe Sayers took a fine low catch at third slip.

A rain delay and some final wicket resistance looked to have taken Hampshire to lunch, but spinner Adil Rashid tempted Shane Bond to spoon a catch to Michael Vaughan at backward point on the stroke of the interval.

It took the Tykes until the 15th over of Hampshire's follow-on before they struck, Bresnan tempting Michael Carberry to edge to Sayers at third slip in his first over.

Bresnan was in the wickets again in his next over when Jimmy Adams was defeated by an inswinger.

Yorkshire skipper Anthony McGrath continued to enjoy tactical success and when he introduced himself into the attack, he struck with his fifth delivery when John Crawley edged an awayswinger to Bresnan at second slip.

After another break the captain picked up another wicket when Michael Lumb sliced to point.

Brown shared an unbroken stand of 52 with Nic Pothas before bad light terminated play 14 overs prematurely.

McGrath was full of praise for Hoggard and said: "At the moment you can't get that ball out of his hand, which is great for us.

"He has done a fantastic job for England and as many people have said it was harsh for him to be left out.

"We want him back playing for England but to do that he has got to bowl like he did here - it is a two-fold thing."
