Hoggard captures the wicket of Michael Carberry at Headingley

Matthew Hoggard enhanced his bid for a Test recall with five wickets as Hampshire closed day two at Headingley 283 behind Yorkshire at 115-5.

Hoggard, 31, dropped during the winter tour of New Zealand, impressed watching national selector Geoff Miller ahead of the first Test in May with 5-51.

Andrew Gale struck his second first-class ton as Yorkshire rallied from 199-5 to a useful total of 398.

Hoggard took 4-33 in his first spell and struck immediately in his second.

The seamer, sixth in England's all-time wicket-taker's list, first contributed with the bat when play began late at midday, making an unbeaten 19.

Gale spent a nervous 15 minutes on 99 before reaching three figures with a top-edged pull for four to fine leg off James Tomlinson.

Boosted by the absence of Hampshire's New Zealand pace spearhead Shane Bond, who turned his right ankle on day one, Yorkshire were in search of maximum batting points, but two short last man Deon Kruis sliced a drive to slip.

Hoggard then impressed either side of tea, causing Michael Carberry some substantial unplesantness with a delivery that jagged back sharply and shattered the left-hander's box.

Michael Brown was caught by Gale diving at short-leg, Jimmy Adams chopped on trying to cut, while Carberry somehow continued but was soon brilliantly caught low at fourth slip by Tim Bresnan.

Two full deliveries accounted for John Crawley and Michael Lumb in the final session, the latter to the first ball of Hoggard's second spell.
