COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE Rose Bowl, day four of four: Hampshire 319-7 drew with Sussex 332 Points: Hants 10, Sussex 9
More dismal weather on the south coast meant that no play was possible on the final day at the Rose Bowl as Hampshire and Sussex shared an uneventful draw. After 11 overs were bowled on day three there was little to play for with Hants 319-7 in reply to Sussex's 332. The talking point of the match was the late withdrawal of pace bowler Ryan Harris who returned to Australia because of an eligibility dispute. "We've all been naive and communication was poor," skipper Chris Adams said. Harris impressed when he took four wickets for Sussex in the traditional season curtain-raiser against the MCC at Lord's. He had been set to play as a domestic player by virtue of his father's British birth, but that would have meant him being an overseas player for Queensland down under and he was effectively forced to choose between the clubs. "I think the player has been let down by the people who manage him," Adams said. "I feel sorry for him in that respect, because it could have been a terrific experience for him. "At this moment in time he has his head on playing for Australia," said, who added that Sussex may well recruit Harris as an overseas player in the future. "We've only seen him in one game. But what a performance that was - he looks an amazing talent. Certainly keep an eye out for him in the next year or so - he may well fulfil that dream."
