COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE Rose Bowl, day one of four (close): Hampshire 4-1 v Sussex 332
Bond (right) began his career at Hants in spectacular style |
Shane Bond blitzed through Sussex's lower order as Hampshire bowled the champions out for 332 on day one despite Murray Goodwin's fine 121. Chris Nash (47), Michael Yardy (46) and skipper Chris Adams (30) wasted good starts to leave the visitors on 201-4. Goodwin, who added 91 with Adams, then put on 116 with Matt Prior (62). But Bond had Prior lbw and took four more late wickets to end with a career-best 7-66 on debut before Hants lost Michael Carberry to close on 4-1. Bond, who swung the new ball on a sunny first morning of the season, blasted out Carl Hopkinson's middle-stump to claim his first wicket. Nash was struck on his wrist by Bond but drove fluently to add 73 in 20 overs with Yardy before edging James Tomlinson low to second slip. Yardy also looked comfortable initially but fell soon after the resumption when he pulled Bond to Chris Tremlett at long-leg. Adams took on the New Zealander with some crunching off-drives but edged a lifter from Tomlinson behind. Goodwin continued to time the ball sweetly and with Prior also producing some crisp shots, Sussex were on course for an imposing total. Bond blew away that prospect with 5-5 in 17 deliveries with the second new ball, sparking the slide by removing Prior with one that kept a tad low. Luke Wright edged to first slip for a fifth-ball duck and Robin Martin-Jenkins, Ragheb Aga and Mushtaq Ahmed did not last long either. Goodwin was caught behind swishing at Chris Tremlett but Sussex struck a blow back when Carberry was leg-before to Martin-Jenkins for two. • Sussex were forced into a late change when they replaced Australian-born all-rounder Ryan Harris with Chris Liddle. Harris has signed for Queensland from South Australia, but continuing to play for Sussex under a British passport would compromise his status back home as a non-overseas player.
