County Championship D1, Edgbaston: Warwickshire 267-5 v Durham (stumps, day two)
Kumar Sangakkara marked his debut with a pugnacious century as Warwickshire recovered from a woeful start to reach 267-5 by stumps at the end of day two.
Graham Onions (3-60) opened with a fine spell for Durham, who were without three England internationals, taking three wickets to leave Warks 23-4.
But Sangakkara and Alex Loudon put on 229 for the fifth wicket, the latter falling to Dale Benkenstein for 105.
Sangakkara remained, though, reaching a 207-ball 137 and looking in good touch.
The Sri Lankan became the ninth player to score a century on his Warwickshire debut - and the first since Jonathan Trott, against Sussex in 2003.
It was an innings oozing class, in difficult conditions on a green pitch, as he and Loudon rebuilt the hosts' innings with a 53-over stand.
And Sangakkara must also be praised for bringing up his century in such quick time, after the match between the teams lying second and third in the table lost the first four sessions to rain.
Only Onions can be really pleased with his work for Durham after he gave the England selectors a big nudge with a superb opening spell of 3-12 off eight overs, including four maidens.
