Udal injury overshadows Hants win
County Championship D1, The Oval, day four: Hampshire 481-9 dec & 224-1 dec beat Surrey 203 & 467 by 35 runs
Hampshire 22 pts, Surrey 4

Ian Salisbury
Salisbury's innings belied his lowly position in the Surrey batting order

Hampshire were given a major scare by Surrey before wrapping up a 35-run Championship victory at The Oval.

But their delight was tempered by a suspected broken ankle, suffered by veteran spinner Shaun Udal.

He suffered the injury attempting to field off his own bowling as Surrey tried to chase down an unlikely target of 503.

Jon Batty (121) and Ian Salisbury (103) led the fight but they were all out for 467 with just 5.3 overs remaining.

Hampshire relied heavily on Shane Warne and Udal, who took seven wickets between them, and the vital blow was struck by Warne when he had Salisbury stumped.

They had enjoyed a productive start to the final day's play after losing night-watchman James Ormond, who was caught behind off Warne for a duck.

Batty and Mark Butcher put on 129 for fourth wicket and it was a huge relief for Hampshire when Batty, one of a group of in-form wicket-keeper/batsmen hoping for England recognition, was lbw to Udal after hitting two sixes and 16 fours.

From 277-4, Surrey subsided to 283-7 as Butcher (72), who had been dropped at short leg off Udal early in his innings, Ali Brown (24 ) and Rikki Clarke (0) departed in quick succession.

But if Hampshire thought the game was almost done and dusted, they were soon disabused of that notion as Salisbury and Azhar Mahmood put together an enterprising partnership which added 177 to the total.

It was seam bowler James Tomlinson who finally parted them when he took a return chance offered by Mahmood (69) after Udal had been carried off the field.

Salisbury's third first-class century of his 18-year career arrived off 118 balls with a steer down to third man for four but Warne, who took 4-138 from 40 overs, brought his innings to an end soon after and Tomlinson ended the match by bowling last man Mohammad Akram.
