County Championship D1, The Oval, day one (close): Hampshire 352-6 v Surrey
Opener Jimmy Adams top-scored with 86 as Hampshire made 352-6 after skipper Shane Warne won the toss and decided to bat against Surrey at The Oval.
Adams and Michael Brown added 82 for the first wicket before Brown (42) was caught behind off Mohammad Akram.
John Crawley fell cheaply but Adams, Michael Lumb (49), Chris Benham (76) and Nic Pothas (40 not out) kept the runs flowing for the visitors.
Spinner Ian Salisbury was the pick of the Surrey bowlers, taking 3-58.
Adams hit a six and 12 fours in his marathon knock before he was caught by Mark Butcher off Salisbury at 178-3.
But Benham then took over, showing further evidence of his potential as his 76 came off just 82 balls with 14 fours.
As the day drew to a close, Warne arrived at the fall of the sixth wicket to join Pothas, and blasted a six from his only scoring stroke.
