County Championship D1, Headingley, day one (close): Yorkshire 323-8 v Hampshire Vaughan applies ice to his knee following his innings |
England captain Michael Vaughan failed in his first Championship innings of the summer on the opening day of Yorkshire's game against Hampshire.
Vaughan was bowled off a no-ball and managed only a single in his 15 minutes at the crease before edging Billy Taylor to the keeper.
Yorkshire, yet to win a Championship game this summer, recovered from 55-4 to post a respectable 323-8.
Tim Bresnan and Jason Gillespie shared a county record 118 in 30 overs.
The partnership was the highest for Yorkshire's ninth wicket against Hampshire, and the highlight was Bresnan blasting Shane Warne for four and six in consecutive balls en route to his Championship best of 79.
Skipper Craig White chose to bat first after winning the toss, but they were soon in trouble with Vaughan's middle and off stumps knocked back by Taylor three balls before he was dismissed by a fine away-swinger.
Taylor also accounted for Matthew Wood, who was lbw for nine, and keeper Nic Pothas claimed his second catch to remove Anthony McGrath for a duck from the bowling of James Bruce.
Australian Darren Lehmann collected six boundaries in his 37 off 39 balls before he was run out, but Michael Lumb (27) and White (17) prevented further damage before the interval.
A furious Lehmann tossed his helmet and gloves to the floor but compatriot Gillespie, fresh from his Test double century earlier this year, smashed three fours in his 33 to lift the Tykes out of danger.
Vaughan was spotted in the pavilion applying an ice pack to his knee but Yorkshire chief David Byas explained it was not a cause for concern.
"This was not as a result of anything happening today but was purely a routine and cautionary measure for someone who has had such a serious knee injury," Byas explained.
