Veteran seamer Martin Bicknell returned figures of 6-45 as Surrey overcame a poor start to enjoy a productive day against Glamorgan at The Oval.
They lost three wickets for the addition of three runs to be all out for 444 at the start of day two.
But Bicknell ensured Glamorgan fell 99 short in reply, despite an innings of 75 off 73 balls from David Harrison.
Openers Scott Newman (46) and Richard Clinton (18) extended the home side's lead with an unbroken stand of 66.
Andrew Davies (3-121) and Robert Croft polished off Surrey's tail at the start of play, but Bicknell soon brought his vast experience to bear on proceedings as he nipped out Ian Thomas (four) and David Hemp (24), both lbw.
Dan Cherry and Michael Powell put on 93 before James Ormond bowled Powell for 43 and another Bicknell lbw shout was upheld to end Cherry's innings on 47.
Jon Hughes was bowled by Rikki Clarke for 30 and the Welsh club subsided to 233-8 before Dean Cosker and Harrison came together in an unlikely stand of 68.
It came to end when keeper Jon Batty claimed his fourth catch as Bicknell removed Cosker for 17, but Harrison continued to enjoy himself in company with Davies, who shared in the fun with 37 off 39 balls, including seven fours.
Harrison cleared the ropes twice and also hit nine fours before his dreams of three figures were ended when Bicknell bowled Davies.
